Dining in Santiago

Cenando en Santiago

 
Home I left Vicuña on 9 March, and went to Santiago for several days, before flying to Lima.

Dejé a Vicuña en 9 de marzo, y fui a Santiago por varios días, antes de volar para Lima.

 

 

The first evening, Patricia and I had a lovely dinner with Elisa and Hugo.

La primera tarde, Patricia y yo tuvimos una cena preciosa con Elisa y Hugo.

 

 

 

Elisa hosted me for two nights a year ago during my first trip to Chile.

Elisa me patrocinó por dos noches hace un año durante mi primer viaje para Chile.

After the totally unexciting choices in restaurants in Vicuña, it was a treat to have several good meals in Santiago before flying to Lima.

The second night was a Chinese restaurant.  Now unfortunately, Santiago seems to have only restaurants of the Cantonese persuasion--no Szechuan.  Nevertheless, Patricia and I had a good meal.

Después de las elecciones completamente sin interés en restaurantes en Vicuña, fue un gusto tener varias buenas comidas en Santiago antes de volar para Lima.

La segunda noche fue un restaurante chino. Ahora desafortunadamente, Santiago parece tener sólo restaurantes de la persuasión Cantonese - ningún Szechuan. No obstante, Patricia y yo comimos bien.

 

Midway through the meal, I spied a couple so obviously in love that I couldn't resist taking a photo.

A medio camino a través de la comida, espié a una pareja de casados tan obviamente en amor que no podría resistir a tomar una foto.

 

 

 

 

Minutes later they were at it again (not at my urging, I might add).

Minutes later another young couple was leaving the restaurant, and passed by my table, he with a Victor Jara tshirt.

Los minutos más tarde otra joven pareja de casados dejaba el restaurante, y pasó por mi mesa, él con un Victor Jara polo.

 

 

 

 

Curiously enough, they seemed to be in love, also.

Victor Jara was a protest singer assassinated by the Pinochet dictatorship, because he told Chileans the truth.

Victor Jara fue un cantante de protesta asesinado por la dictadura Pinochet, porque él les dijo a los chilenos la verdad.

The wet street,

running to the factory

where Manuel works.

 

The wide smile,

rain in your hair,

nothing mattered,

you were going to meet him.

After the three photos, he shook my hand, saying, "You're the first gringo I've offered my hand to"

I'm proud of that.

Tras las tres fotos, él sacudió mi mano, diciendo, "usted es el primer gringo que doy mi mano"

Me enorgullezco de eso

 

 

 

Gawd, how I love seeing people in love!

The next night we found a great Italian restaurant, and became fast friends with two of the wait staff.
