In Cuba, music is in the air

You hear it first in the streets

here diners (or imbibers) are serenaded in Plaza de Dolores

while not far away another group holds forth

Along the pedestrian walkway (Jose Antonio Saco) a group uses this big brown box...

...a machine that plays rolls, like a player piano

At a nearby busy intersection the group includes a whistler

(yeah, it's the guy on the right)

But you also hear music indoors

The Casa de la Trova has about 5 performance spaces

often with both music and dancing

at various times through the day

Walls are filled with memorabilia

Trovadores were Cuba's singer/songwriters

Trova was a style of music that developed in Oriente province (Eastern Cuba), especially in Santiago de Cuba

I think that's Compay Segundo (of Buena Vista fame) on the left in this photo

In the street-level performance spaces, there are often people taking in the concert at the barred windows

often waiting for a generous patron to spring for their admission

if that doesn't happen, they just enjoy the music

But our favorite hangout in Santiago was just a few steps away on Calle Heredia

Casa de Queso (House of Cheese) is a small music/dance club

Even Liv got into the spirit

dancing with the locals

with Fidel, the flaming redhead

And one of the great things is just connecting with the locals

I sat next to Alex, himself a superb dancer, and agreeable conversationalist

and with Ileana

while Liv kept company with Carmen
