Getting to Al-Dayr is hard work

You start out on a nice level stretch

But very soon an endless array of stone steps faces you

with only an occasional level stretch as respite

then it's up, up, up

But looking back, you discover you've made real progress

And these cats have made it, so you can, too

Of course, some people cheat a bit

And you wonder how those donkeys are going to make it

but they do

Along the way, the ubiquitous merchant

Up, up, and more up

Another look back, another spectacular view

And then you're there

You're at the plaza that fronts the monastery
